Former Treasurer of the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (CPCC), Ram Gopal Agarwal, was detained on Wednesday by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) and the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Chhattisgarh in connection with a money laundering investigation, officials said.

Confirming the development, EOW/ACB Director Amresh Mishra (IPS) said Agarwal had been taken into custody as part of an ongoing probe into alleged financial irregularities. Officials, however, did not immediately disclose specific details regarding the allegations or the amount involved in the investigation.

According to the EOW/ACB, the detention forms part of a wider inquiry into suspected financial transactions that are under scrutiny. Investigators are examining documents, financial records and other evidence to establish the flow of funds and determine whether offences under the relevant laws have been committed.

Authorities have not yet released further information regarding the nature of the alleged money laundering case or whether additional individuals or entities are being investigated. Officials indicated that the inquiry remains at an active stage and more details may emerge following further questioning and examination of evidence.

The EOW and ACB are the principal state agencies responsible for investigating cases involving economic offences, corruption and financial crimes in Chhattisgarh. The agencies have intensified action in several high-profile financial investigations in recent months.

No official response from Ram Gopal Agarwal or the Chhattisgarh Congress had been issued immediately following the detention. The Congress party has yet to comment on the development.

Officials said the investigation is continuing, and any further legal action will depend on the evidence collected during the course of the probe. The authorities have not confirmed whether formal charges have been filed at this stage.

The detention is expected to draw political attention in Chhattisgarh, where investigations involving senior political figures often become the subject of intense debate between the ruling party and the opposition.
