Former Chinese gymnastics star sparks controversy over sexy dance videos
The videos, which were posted on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, attracted a large number of viewers.
In some videos, the 29-year-old also wore her old national gymnastics team uniform, despite having retired more than a decade ago.
The videos drew criticism, including from fellow gymnast Guan Chenchen, a gold medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Guan commented on one of Wu’s videos, telling her that she was “crossing the line” and tarnishing the image of Chinese gymnastics. Wu responded and mocked Guan, leading to a heated debate before the comments were deleted, Shanghai Daily reported.

Opinions about Wu’s behavior were divided. Supporters argue that, as a retired athlete, Wu is free to express herself as long as it is not illegal. Wu herself has said her family supports her lifestyle. She reportedly earns a living as a dance teacher. However, many think that the former national athlete should uphold the reputation and dignity of the sport.
Wu issued a public apology during a livestream on Nov. 24, acknowledging the stir caused by her interaction with Guan. She explained that her intention was simply to bring joy to her audience through dancing. However, her Douyin account was partially restricted for violating community guidelines.
On the following day, the Chinese Gymnastics Association addressed the controversy. While noting that Wu is no longer an active athlete, the association stated that it is reviewing the situation to determine an appropriate solution.

Wu was a decorated gymnast during her career, earning gold medals in the balance beam and floor exercise at the 2010 Doha World Cup. She successfully defended her balance beam title at the 2011 World Cup in Ghent, Belgium, and became the 2012 Asian champion in the uneven bars.
Guan, 20, won gold in the balance beam at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics before retiring in 2022 to enroll at Zhejiang University.
