Former Railway Minister Mukul Roy passes away, breathed his last at the age of 71
The country’s former Railway Minister and veteran Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mukul Roy has passed away. He breathed his last at Apollo Hospital in Salt Lake, Kolkata. He suffered a heart attack on Sunday night, after which he was hurriedly brought to the hospital. He died during treatment at around 1.30 in the night. Mukul Roy’s son Shubhranshu Roy has confirmed his death.
Mukul Roy was a big name in West Bengal politics. Mukul Roy, born on 17 April 1954, said goodbye to the world at the age of 71. He was one of the founding members of Trinamool Congress. He was counted among the leaders closest to Mamata Banerjee.

How did Mukul Roy become Railway Minister?
He also served as Railway Minister at the Centre. When Mamata Banerjee became the Chief Minister of West Bengal in 2011, she left the Railway Ministry. After that Mukul Roy was given additional responsibility of Railway Ministry. He was also elected member of Rajya Sabha twice. He kept falling ill continuously for the last few years. Kept distance from politics. He joined BJP in 2017 but by 2021, he had returned to his old party TMC.

How was your political career?
Mukul Roy was one of the founding members of the Trinamool Congress when it was formed in 1998. After differences with the party, he chose the path of Bharatiya Janata Party in 2017. Mukul Roy became MLA from Krishnanagar North constituency on a BJP ticket in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, but returned to Trinamool after the elections.
Mukul Roy, during his long political career, served as the Railway Minister in the second term of the UPA government in 2011. At that time Trinamool Congress was part of the central government. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha twice from West Bengal. Veteran leaders of the country have expressed grief over his demise.
