Former South Korean president sentenced to 30 years in prison for sending drones to Kim Jong Un’s country:
Read, Digital Desk : Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for deploying drones in North Korea, accusing the action of endangering the country.
The troubles of former South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol are not appearing to stop. The court has sentenced him to 30 years imprisonment for a drone attack on North Korea. He is accused of martial law imposition in North Korea in 2024, and abusing his position. Reports claim that he was responsible for sending drones to North Korea in October 2024 which significantly increased tensions, he has been charged with creation of war-like situations.
Life imprisonment awarded already
The sentence sought by the prosecutors against the former president was 30 years, however, he denied any charges and maintained his position as not committing any act of treason against the nation. A court in Kariya previously sentenced him to life imprisonment due to his role in the imposition of martial law, he was a prominent figure in the rebellion.
The president was impeached by a motion which was confirmed by the constitutional court, and he was dismissed from his position. The drone incident, it is said, has fueled North Korea South Korea relations. Current president Lee Jae-myung has regretted the move by stating that unnecessary tension does no good to the economy of the nation. An inquiry was set up by South Korea on drone deployment within North Korea, during Yoon’s term as president.
Kim Yo Jong the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has complimented the South Korean president’s statement as wise. It must be pointed out that the 65-year old Eun Suk Yeol attempted to seize control of the parliamentary in December 2024 using military and police forces. She is accused of an attempted illegal seize of the National assembly. Later she stated that her decision was made in order to prevent anti national forces.
Martial law was imposed for close to 6 hours, with military and police personnel surrounding the parliament building. Following this, the parliament voted unanimously to lift martial law and the emergency order was withdrawn. This has subsequently caused political upheaval in South Korea. The former President Yeol has sought a death penalty sentence. Some members of the military have been found guilty of imposition of martial law.
