Big decision on 1984 Sikh riots after 40 years, court acquitted Sajjan Kumar, after a long legal battle the result was positive

New Delhi. A news has come from the Delhi court today which has once again healed the wounds of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. This decades-old dark chapter has taken a new and shocking turn. Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has acquitted former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in the Janakpuri and Vikaspuri violence case, giving a big relief. This decision has come at a time when the victims’ families were sitting in the hope for years that perhaps now they will get complete justice. Sajjan Kumar, who has been considered one of the main faces of these riots, has now been acquitted of charges in this particular case. Let us know due to which arguments and lack of evidence the court had to take this decision.

This entire matter is related to those dark days of 1984 when the country’s capital was burning in the fire of riots. SIT had filed two separate FIRs against Sajjan Kumar. The first FIR was related to the incident of November 1, 1984, in which Sardar Sohan Singh and his son-in-law Avtar Singh were brutally murdered in Janakpuri area. The second FIR was for a heinous incident that took place the next day i.e. on 2 November 1984 in Vikaspuri, where Sardar Gurcharan Singh was burnt alive by the mob. In both these cases, the SIT had made Sajjan Kumar the main accused for instigating the mob and hatching a conspiracy.

During the court proceedings, Sajjan Kumar declared himself completely innocent. While recording his statement in July 2025, he took a very tough stance and raised questions on the investigating agencies themselves. Sajjan Kumar told the court that he was never involved in the riots and there is not a single concrete evidence against him. He became emotional and even said that he could not even dream of being involved in such violence. His lawyers have consistently argued that the investigating agency has not conducted a fair investigation and he has been dragged into the case only as part of a political conspiracy.

The court of Special Judge Digvinay Singh, while giving its verdict on Thursday, acquitted Sajjan Kumar from both the FIRs. The court had completed the hearing of this case in December 2025 itself and reserved the decision. The court believed that the prosecution had failed to prove the allegations against Sajjan Kumar beyond reasonable doubt. Although the case was reopened by the SIT in February 2015 to provide justice to the victims, the outcome remained inconclusive even after a 10-year long legal battle. After this decision, deep disappointment is being seen in the Sikh community and the victims’ families. Even though Sajjan Kumar may have got relief in this case, the screams of those streets of 1984 are still waiting for justice. This decision also raises many big questions on the functioning of the Indian justice system and investigative agencies.
