Four-Story Houses and Large Vehicles Buried Under Heavy Snowfall in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula

Moscow. Heavy snowfall in Russia’s Kamchatka region on Saturday blanketed the entire area in a thick layer of white, severely disrupting daily life. Houses and vehicles were buried under the snow. The region has been experiencing record-breaking snowfall in recent days due to powerful cyclones and low-pressure storms.

The situation is so severe that several meters of snow have fallen, burying roads, houses, and cars under thick layers of snow. In the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the entire area was covered in snow, with the snowfall breaking a 30-year record and snowdrifts reaching the height of four-story buildings in some places. People are having to jump out of their windows into the snowdrifts to get out of their homes.

Several videos show residents digging tunnels to get out of their homes. One viral video shows a man digging his car out from under 5 meters of snow. He had parked his car in a “safe place” where such heavy snowfall had never occurred before, but this time the entire car was buried under the snow. He spent hours shoveling away the snow with large shovels, but even after freeing the car, driving was difficult due to the surrounding snow.

This snowfall has been ongoing for several days and has broken a 30-year record. The storm, which began on January 13, dumped 30-60% of the region’s average monthly precipitation in a single day. Schools were closed, public transport was halted, flights were canceled, and a state of emergency was declared. Emergency services dug tunnels to rescue the elderly and those trapped by the snow. Unfortunately, two people died due to snow falling from roofs; a 63-year-old man was buried under a pile of snow that fell from the roof of his house.
