Foxconn plans to set up display module assembly unit in Tamil Nadu

Delhi Delhi. Foxconn is evaluating investing around $1 billion to set up a facility to assemble smartphone display modules in Tamil Nadu. According to the report, this will be the first such facility to be set up by the company and it will primarily provide services to Apple for assembling iPhone display modules. Further, the report states that, Foxconn is not using this facility to just supply iPhone displays internally, i.e. to its other facilities where it assembles the iPhone. Instead, it plans to become a supplier to other iPhone contract manufacturers in the country, including Tata Electronics and Pegatron.

As far as the timeline is concerned, there is no information on when the facility will be operational. However, the report suggests that the company is planning to make the facility operational 'as soon as possible'. It is worth noting that setting up a display module assembling unit in India will help the company reduce its dependence on China. It will also increase the overall turnaround time for manufacturing iPhones in the country. Additionally, the move is likely to help India climb up the electronics manufacturing value chain.

Foxconn currently operates around nine campuses and 30 factories in India, wherein it employs thousands of people. On one hand, the company is planning to increase its footprint to rapidly manufacture iPhones in the country. On the other hand, it is also expanding its presence in the EV tech sector. Earlier this month, Foxconn announced a partnership with Netherlands-based Stellantis NV to form a joint venture called SiliconAuto. SiliconAuto has set up its research and development centre in Bengaluru, where it will focus on semiconductor product design and system-on-chip (SoC) development for the automobile industry. Apart from this, Foxconn is working on setting up its EV manufacturing plant in India. It is also working on setting up a battery manufacturing unit for EVs in the country.
