France bans children’s use of social media, Parliament passes bill for those under 15 years of age
Paris. The French Parliament has approved a bill banning the use of social media by children under 15 years of age. This law will come into effect from September 1. Under the bill, social media companies will have to verify the age of users and prevent children below 15 years of age from using the platform. According to French media reports, 279 MPs voted in favor of the bill, while 81 MPs voted against it. After approval, this law is being considered a big step regarding the online safety of children in the country.
Macron expressed happiness, said – the promise has been fulfilled
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the decision on social media platform X. He wrote that he had promised this and now voting on this issue has taken place in Parliament. He also thanked the MPs. Macron said the ban on social networks for children under 15 would be implemented from the start of the new school session.
Many countries are taking steps regarding the impact of social media
In view of the increasing influence of social media on children and youth, many countries have started taking steps in this direction. Australia has implemented a ban on the use of streaming platforms for children under 16 from December 10, 2025. Apart from this, preparations are being made to impose similar restrictions on other major social media platforms also.
At the same time, countries like Denmark, Spain, Greece, Turkey, South Korea and Britain have also announced consideration of new rules to control children’s social media use. This decision of France has come amid the ongoing global debate on children’s digital safety, online privacy and the effects of social media on mental health.
