From heartbreak to comeback: Rohit Sharma reveals emotional toll of World Cup 2023 defeat

NEW DELHI: Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma opened up about the emotional toll of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 Final. Despite India’s dominant run in the tournament, the defeat in the final left him deeply shaken, questioning his place in the sport he loves.

Struggle after the final

Speaking at an event, Rohit admitted how difficult it was to cope with the loss and the disappointment that followed. The emotional impact left him drained and uncertain about continuing his cricketing journey.

“After the 2023 World Cup Final, I was completely distraught and felt like I didn’t want to play this sport anymore because it had taken everything out of me,” he said.

Finding his way back

He gradually rediscovered his passion for the game, reminding himself why he loved cricket and slowly regaining his energy on the field.

“It took some time and I kept reminding myself that this is something I truly love, that it was right in front of me, and I couldn’t let it go so easy. Slowly, I found my way back, regaining the energy and getting myself moving again on the field,” Rohit added.

India had a stellar World Cup campaign, winning all group stage matches comfortably and defeating New Zealand in the semi-finals.

However, in the final, Travis Head’s brilliant innings guided Australia to victory, handing India their first loss of the tournament and leaving Rohit and the team visibly heartbroken.
