Chetan Sakariya Comeback Story: Chetan Sakariya’s story is an extraordinary example of struggle, tragedy and determination, where the son of an ordinary auto driver fought poverty to make his way to the IPL and the Indian team. Coming from a small village in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, Chetan’s father used to drive a tempo, and there was always financial crisis in the house.
No cricket kit, no formal training
In his childhood, he did not even have his own cricket kit, nor even shoes to play. Recognizing his talent, senior Saurashtra player Sheldon Jackson got him the necessary shoes and helped him reach the MRF Pace Foundation. Chetan did not receive any formal training till the age of 16, he kept practicing on his own and gradually improved his bowling.
His career took off rapidly when he made his debut for Saurashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Ranji Trophy in 2018 and attracted everyone’s attention by taking five wickets in his first innings.
Luck shines in IPL 2021
After this, in the 2021 IPL auction, Rajasthan Royals bought him for Rs 1.2 crore, which not only improved the financial condition of the family but also gave him national recognition. In the same year, Chetan made his international debut for India in T20 and ODI against Sri Lanka and made an impact with his swing bowling. Amidst this success, his life was hit one after the other by serious blows—his younger brother committed suicide during the IPL and his father died of COVID-19 a few months later.
The team gave courage to Chetan who was emotionally shattered, Rajasthan Royals paid tribute to his brother by writing the letters ‘RK’ and “Miss You Bro” on his jersey. Chetan himself says that if there was no cricket, perhaps he would not have been able to come out of this difficult period.

The troubles did not end here, in a serious accident in 2024, he severed a nerve in his hand and thought his career would be over, but after pain, rehabilitation and months of hard work, he returned to the field and regained his form with strong performances in domestic cricket.
