Mumbai: The data released by Instamart on the occasion of World Chocolate Day, which is celebrated on July 7, has revealed an interesting picture of the changing love of chocolate in India. The report revealed that viral internet trends, premium chocolates and healthier options are driving a major shift in Indian consumers’ tastes. Once limited to festivals, chocolate has now become an important part of everyday grocery shopping.

According to Instagram, orders for the viral Dubai pistachio chocolate have grown by a whopping 11,739 percent, making it the fastest growing chocolate trend. Still, the first choice of Indians is traditional milk chocolate. Milk chocolate accounts for four out of every ten chocolate orders, while wafer bars, fruit and nut, caramel and hazelnut flavors are also popular.
Increased health awareness has also had an effect on chocolate purchases. Orders for sugar-free chocolates have grown by 85 per cent, while dark chocolates have grown by nearly 50 per cent. Protein chocolates are also expanding rapidly, and products that balance taste and health are getting good response from consumers.
On a city-wise basis, Bangalore has emerged as the ‘Chocolate Capital’ of India, recording nearly double the chocolate orders compared to other metros. Almost 25 percent of the orders for sugar-free and protein chocolates came from Bangalore alone. While Mumbai has topped the country in purchasing premium chocolates, cities like Surat, Vadodara, Kolhapur and Siliguri are also emerging as new hubs for premium chocolates.
Chocolate lovers’ purchases also revealed some interesting figures. A customer in Ahmedabad purchased chocolates worth Rs 1.59 lakh in a year, while a customer in Kochi placed as many as 277 chocolate orders in a year. This shows that chocolate love in India is becoming more diverse and growing.

Valentine’s Day also saw a big craze for chocolates. On February 14, there was a 74 per cent increase in chocolate orders and as many as 745 chocolates were ordered in one minute at 11.25 am. Along with popcorn, ice cream and soft drinks, consumers are now buying chocolates along with instant noodles, bananas, protein shakes and other everyday items, indicating that chocolate has become an integral part of everyday lifestyle rather than just for festivals.
