Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing and Oil Refinery), Ministry of Petroleum, informed that India is the fourth largest refining country in the world. India consumes about 5.5 million barrels of crude oil per day. There are currently more than one lakh petrol pumps operating in the country, most of which belong to government companies. The ministry has assured that no pump has run out of oil and there will be no shortage of fuel in future.

28 percent increase in LPG production

The government has taken special steps for the availability of not only petrol-diesel, but also domestic gas (LPG). On March 9, an order was issued under the ‘Essential Commodities Act’ directing all refineries to increase LPG production. After this domestic LPG production has increased from 25 percent to 28 percent. Sujata Sharma noted that India imports about 60 percent of its LPG requirement. 90 percent of this supply goes through the ‘Strait of Hormuz’. Although the current global situation is challenging, the government is making war-time efforts to ensure that gas supply to domestic consumers is not disrupted.

About 5 million LPG cylinders are delivered daily in the country. However, in the last few days there has been a sudden increase in cylinder bookings by customers due to the fear of global tensions. Speaking on this, the ministry clarified that there is no problem in supply. Therefore, citizens are urged not to panic and book extra cylinders.

Special Instructions to State Governments

The Central Government has also given important instructions to the State Governments to ensure proper distribution of fuel and gas. It has been directed to prepare a list of needy customers and to ensure delivery of domestic and commercial cylinders in priority order. Overall, the government has asserted that India’s energy security is fully under control, no matter how dire the global situation may be.
