Currently, the country has enough reserves of crude oil to last for 69 days, and approximately the same amount of reserves of natural gas. Apart from this, there is also a safe stock of 45 days supply of LPG (Domestic Cooking Gas) which directly impacts the budget of every household.

In a high-level meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM), chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, it was confirmed that India’s energy security is completely strong, and there is no possibility of shortage of any petroleum product at present. Taking precautionary measures to ensure security of supply, the Central Government has significantly increased the production of LPG (cooking gas). The production level which was earlier between 35,000 to 36,000 tonnes per day has now been increased to 54,000 tonnes per day.

Even though the country has sufficient reserves, the challenges on the economic front are continuously increasing. Due to increasing tensions between Iran and Israel, as well as obstructions to sea routes in the Red Sea, crude oil prices are skyrocketing. In India, petrol and diesel prices have remained stable for the last 70 days; However, oil companies are bearing the brunt of this stagnation.

According to reports, oil companies are incurring a loss of around ₹1,000 crore every day. Estimates suggest that by the first quarter of 2026, this total loss could exceed ₹2 lakh crore, indicating a possible increase in fuel prices in the near future.
