Gaikwad blames bowling as CSK lose to PBKS

Chennai: Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad did not hold back in his assessment after his team slumped to a five-wicket defeat against Punjab Kings in the IPL 2026 clash, pointing to inconsistent bowling execution as the key reason behind the loss.

Despite posting a formidable total of 209 for 5, CSK failed to defend the score as Punjab Kings chased it down comfortably in 18.4 overs, leaving Gaikwad searching for answers.

“That is what cost us”

Speaking after the match, Gaikwad admitted that the team had the right bowling combination on paper but failed to deliver consistently on the field.

“We felt we had three seamers and two good wrist spinners, especially for the middle overs after the powerplay. But it was a slight off day for both of them. That is what cost us,” he said.

He emphasised that while there were moments of good execution, the bowlers could not maintain pressure at crucial stages of the game.

Missed momentum in middle overs

Gaikwad highlighted the middle overs as the turning point, where CSK failed to build sustained pressure on the opposition batters.

“There was a point when the required run rate went to 11. A couple of good overs could have pushed it to 12–13. We just didn’t get that momentum in the middle,” he explained.

The inability to capitalise during this phase allowed Punjab Kings to regain control and steer the chase with confidence.

Batting positives for CSK

While the defeat was disappointing, Gaikwad acknowledged strong performances with the bat. Youngster Ayush Mhatre impressed with a fluent 73 off 43 balls, anchoring CSK’s innings.

All-rounder Shivam Dube also made a valuable contribution, helping the team post a competitive total.

However, the captain stressed that such batting efforts need better support from the bowling unit to translate into wins.

Iyer credits strong start

Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer credited the team’s explosive start for setting up the successful chase.

Openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh provided early momentum, putting CSK bowlers under pressure right from the outset.

“The way we started today was exceptional. Their batting has been phenomenal and it stabilises the rhythm for us,” Iyer said.

He added that the team’s clarity in approach and confidence in handling pressure situations played a significant role in the win.

CSK’s struggles continue

The defeat means Chennai Super Kings are still searching for their first win of the IPL 2026 season. Despite having a balanced squad, the team has struggled to deliver consistent performances.

Bowling, in particular, has emerged as a concern, with the side failing to defend competitive totals.

Conclusion

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s candid remarks reflect the urgency within the CSK camp to address their shortcomings. While the batting unit has shown promise, improvements in bowling execution will be crucial if the team hopes to turn its campaign around in the coming matches.
