Ganga bath and weekend traffic increased problems, Haridwar’s traffic system collapsed
Haridwar Traffic Jam: Due to the huge crowd of devotees and tourists in Haridwar due to weekend and Ganga bathing, the traffic system of the city was completely affected. Since Saturday morning, there was a long traffic jam in many major areas including Harki Paidi, North Haridwar, Bhimgora, Rishikul, Devpura Chowk, Singhdwar and Jwalapur.
Devotees gather for Ganga bath
The situation was such that vehicles were seen moving very slowly on many routes and it took hours for people to cover a distance of a few kilometres. There was constant pressure on the main roads and highways of the city due to increase in the number of tourists coming from outside and devotees coming to bathe in the Ganga due to the weekend.
Devotees were seen walking on foot
The traffic problem was further compounded by vehicles parked on the roadside as parking lots around Harki Paidi filled up quickly. Two-wheeler drivers also remained stuck in the jam for a long time. Many devotees were seen walking to their destination to avoid traffic.
Huge trouble in markets and intersections
Due to the large number of vehicles reaching Haridwar from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab, the traffic police had to struggle a lot to manage the situation. Local people also faced a lot of trouble at markets and major intersections, where long queues of vehicles remained.
Number of devotees is more on Sunday also
Police implemented diversions on many routes to control traffic, but due to heavy crowd the situation could not return to normal. The administration hopes that the number of devotees may remain high on Sunday also. In view of this, additional police force has been deployed and passengers have been appealed to use the designated parking spaces and take alternative routes.
