The ancient Gaurishankar temple located in the crowded Chandni Chowk area of Old Delhi still remains a symbol of hundreds of years old faith and mythological tradition. Built around the 18th century by Maratha Sardar Apa Gangadhar (Bhaurao Holkar), this temple is also very famous because of the ancient Shivalinga made of mercury. History of the temple
Gaurishankar Temple is located near the Digambar Jain Red Temple and Red Fort in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. This temple is considered to be one of the oldest Shiva temples in Delhi. It is said that this temple is about 800 years old and its present form was built in the 18th century.
The temple was rebuilt by Maratha Sardar Apa Gangadhar in 1761 AD. This temple became the center of the religious identity of Delhi during the Maratha rule.
Features of Gaurishankar Temple
- Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati – The main Shivalinga installed in the temple is said to be made of frozen mercury, which is considered very rare and sacred.
- Ancient Architecture – The external structure of the temple is built in the ancient North Indian style. Its high spire, bell tower and carved gates make it unique.
- Statues of Gauri-Shankar – In the temple, the idol of Goddess Parvati is present along with Lord Shiva, behind which are also the idols of Ganesha and Kartikeya.
- Importance of Shivalinga – The Shivalinga here is said to be 800 years old and is believed to be self-manifested.

Mythological story related to the temple
According to folklore, Apa Gangadhar, a great soldier, was seriously injured during a battle. He prayed to Lord Shiva that if he survived, he would build a grand temple of Shiva and Parvati.
His prayers were successful, he miraculously recovered, and then he built the Gaurishankar temple. Therefore this temple is also called ‘Sakshi Temple of the Devotee’s Pledge’. Another story is that the Shivalinga here itself appeared in earth form, that is, no one established it. He himself appeared from the earth. For this reason it is considered a very holy and powerful pilgrimage.
