Gautam Gambhir files petition in Delhi HC against AI deepfakes, image damaged by fake videos
Delhi: Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has approached the Delhi High Court (HC) over the alleged misuse of his image and identity. He has alleged that his identity is being used wrongly through AI technology without his permission.
What is the matter?
A civil petition was filed on behalf of Gambhir in the Commercial Division of Delhi High Court on 19 March. In this petition, it has been said that for some time now, fake content is being created using his name, face and voice, which is damaging his image.
Objection to deepfake and AI content
The petition also mentions that misleading content is being created on social media platforms using techniques like deepfake videos, face-swapping and voice cloning. Not only is wrong information being spread through these fake videos, but some people are also earning financial benefits from it.
Legal action and demands
Gambhir has appealed to the court to ensure the protection of his personality rights. He has also demanded a compensation of Rs 2.5 crore and has requested for instructions to immediately remove all such objectionable content.
Gambhir’s statement
Gambhir says that this is not just a matter of his personal image, but it is a bigger issue related to law and dignity of public personality. He also said that in this era of AI, it is necessary to control such activities, so that no one’s identity can be misused.
Increasing cases on social media
According to his legal team, since the end of 2025, the number of such fake content has increased rapidly on platforms like Instagram, X, YouTube and Facebook. Several videos also went viral, one of which falsely claimed his resignation, while the other distorted his statement.
growing anxiety
Gambhir has already faced trolling on social media, but now fake videos being made through AI technology have made this problem more serious. This case is now giving rise to an important debate regarding the security of public figures in the digital age.
