New Delhi: Former head coach of the Indian cricket team, Gautam Gambhir has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court against the inappropriate use of his identity. He has filed a civil suit in the commercial division of the court demanding strict action against AI generated deepfake videos, false content, and selling products using his name without permission.

According to reports, there has been a sharp increase in the number of fake content in his name on social media platforms since the end of 2025. Videos have been created using AI, face-swap, and voice cloning technology on platforms such as Instagram, A video of a false resignation was viewed more than 29 lakh times, while another video crossed the 17 lakh views mark.

16 parties were made defendants

This issue is not limited to social media only, posters and other products are being sold without permission using his name and image on e-commerce platforms too. A total of 16 parties have been declared defendants in the case, including some social media accounts as well as platforms like Amazon and Flipkart. Apart from this, Meta Platforms, Google and other technology companies have also been categorized in it.

Mention of old court decisions

Gambhir has referred to the legal provisions related to Copyright Act 1957, Trademark Act 1999 and Commercial Court in his lawsuit. At the same time, he referred to the court’s previous decisions, which have provided legal protection to personality rights.

Demanded compensation of Rs 2.5 crore

He has sought a compensation of Rs 2.5 crore from the court, removal of all false material, and a permanent ban on inappropriate use of his name, face and voice in future. Additionally, they have sought an early hearing so that such content can be removed immediately.

Gautam Gambhir said that his identity is being misused to spread fake information and financial benefits are also being taken from it. He has described this as not just a personal loss but a serious issue related to law and respect.
