Gambhir, on Friday, was spotted with current selector RP Singh watching the Delhi Capitals vs Kolkata Knight Riders encounter at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The two former India teammates could be seen chatting during the course of the DC vs KKR clash. Fans speculated that the duo were perhaps scouting potential Indian talents as well as keeping a close eye on current players’ form.
After the current IPL season ends, the Men in Blue are set to play a short home series against Afghanistan. This will be followed by tours of Ireland and England in June and July. The players then get a short break before going to Sri Lanka in August for a short series.
Gautam Gambhir’s past IPL connection with DC and KKR
It is to be noted that the former opening batter has a history with both teams in his 11-year-long stint as a player in the league. Gautam made his IPL debut for Delhi in 2008 and played for three seasons at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. This was followed by a move to KKRwhere he led the side to two title wins in 2012 and 2014.
In 2018, the former Kolkata skipper came back to the Capitals as the captain but stepped down in the middle of the season owing to poor performance, and was replaced by Shreyas Iyer as the skipper. Gambhir then went back to the Knight Riders as a mentor in 2024 after a few seasons with LSG in the same role and helped the side win their third IPL title this time under Iyer’s captaincy.
Axar Patel concedes hopes of playoff qualifications
The Capitals suffered their fourth loss in five games as they were thrashed by KKR on Friday night. Finn Allen’s maiden IPL ton saw the visiting side win by eight wickets and overhaul the target of 143 in the 15th over. Ajinkya Rahane and his side have now four games in a row to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Speaking at the end of the game, Axar Patel said that his side will prepare for the next season. This statement signifies that the 32-year-old has given up on the playoff hopes this year. Speaking at the end of the game, Patel said, “We have to plan for the next year and decide on the approach. We also have to take a look at the bench and give those players some chances.”
