Gautam Menon will have to pay crores of rupees for the incomplete film, Madras High Court gave instructions
Desk. Filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon has suffered a legal setback. Madras High Court on Monday rejected the appeal of him and his company Photon Factory. The court said that he will have to return Rs 4.25 crore and 12 percent annual interest to a production company RS Infotainment.
In the year 2008, an agreement was signed between Gautam Menon’s company Photon Factory and RS Infotainment to make a new film. RS Infotainment had given Rs 4.25 crore for the film. But the production of the film could not start. Therefore RS Infotainment demanded the money back and filed a case in the court.
The single judge had ruled in 2022 that Gautam Menon and his company should return the money. Now a bench of two judges also upheld the same decision. The court said that despite receiving the money, the film was not made, hence Gautam Menon will have to return this amount.
Gautam Menon’s team showed documents and chartered accountant’s certificate in the court. He said the money was spent on legitimate activities related to the film. But the court has clearly refused to accept this. His lawyers said that RS Infotainment had promised to pay the full amount (13.50 crores) but did not pay the entire amount. That’s why the film could not be made. Now he is thinking of appealing against this decision in the Supreme Court.
RS Infotainment is a large production company, which produces and distributes Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi films. It had previously produced Gautham Menon’s films ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya’ and ‘Viduthalai Part 1’ and Part 2.
