Hindu leader will get big responsibility in Rahman government, will become minister for the first time in Bangladesh’s democracy
Hindu Minister in Tariq Rahman Cabinet: Preparations are being made to give representation to the Hindu community in the new government of Tariq Rehman. There is talk that senior BNP leader Goyeshwar Chandra Roy may be included in the new cabinet. This time, Roy is also among the two Hindu MPs who reached Parliament after winning on the BNP election symbol.
According to the report of The Daily Star, about 40 ministers may get a place in the new cabinet. Tariq Rehman is trying to strike a balance between experienced and new faces. Among the leaders who are expected to become ministers, prominent names are Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Salahuddin Chaudhary, Mirza Abbas, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Amir Khosru Mahmood Chaudhary and Abdul Moin Khan. All of them had previously been ministers in Khaleda Zia’s government.
New faces also included in the cabinet
Along with this, there is talk of inclusion of some new faces in the cabinet. Among these, the names of Shama Ubaid (Faridpur-2), Afroza Khanum Rita (Manikganj-3) and Farzana Sharmin Putul (Nator-1) are coming out.
The name of Goyeshwar Chandra Roy from the Hindu community is also in discussion because before the elections, Tariq Rehman had talked about giving representation to all the communities. He said that balanced development of the country is possible only through inclusive participation.
Who is Goyeshwar Chandra Roy?
Goyeshwar Chandra Roy heads the policy-making committee of BNP and has been associated with the party since 1978. Even during the reign of Sheikh Hasina, he remained active in favor of Khaleda Zia. He reached Parliament by winning the elections from Dhaka-3 seat and has been a minister earlier also.
His brother-in-law Nitoy Roy Choudhary has also reached Parliament this time on BNP ticket. It is believed that Goyeshwar’s position in the party has been further strengthened by the victory of two family members.

Role of Hindu community in Bangladesh
The population of Hindu community in Bangladesh is about 9 percent. There has been Hindu representation in the cabinet in the past also. At least two Hindu ministers have been included in Sheikh Hasina’s government every time. Bidhan Chandra Poddar was also given a place in the cabinet in the interim government of Muhammad Yunus.
