‘Gen Z’ government in Nepal: Balendra Shah’s RSP towards clear majority, anti-India KP Sharma Oli’s crushing defeat

Kathmandu, March 6. Balendra Shah’s (Balen) party Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is on the way to gain a clear majority in the elections in India’s neighboring Nepal. RSP, which has received support from ‘Gen Z’, was leading on 101 seats when last reported. At the same time, former anti-India Prime Minister Khadga Prasad (KP) Sharma Oli has suffered a deep blow. His party Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) seems to be limited to less than 10 seats and he himself is lagging behind Balen Shah by more than five thousand votes.

Nepali analysts say that RSP has ended the decades-old hegemony of Nepal’s parties with the help of Gen G voters. Nepali Congress has been able to lead on 12 seats and pro-China KP Sharma Oli’s party CPN-UML has been able to lead on only nine seats. Whereas another former PM Pushp Dahal Prachanda is leading by four thousand votes.

last year Gen-Z Oli government fell amid protests

It is noteworthy that 60 percent voting was recorded in the national elections held on Thursday. This is the first general election in the country after violent Gen-Z protests last year. KP Sharma Oli’s coalition government had fallen due to violent protests.

KP Sharmi Oli’s CPN-UML, Sher Bahadur Deuba’s Nepali Congress and Pushpa Dahal Prachanda’s CPN (Maoist Centre) are in the fray in the elections. 49 year old Gagan Thapa is also in the race to become Prime Minister. He is the new chief of the country’s oldest party after the break with the Nepali Congress. But the Rashtriya Swatantra Party of former rapper Balendra Shah (Balen), who was the mayor of Kathmandu and was very popular among the youth, has left all those old stalwarts far behind.
