- The craze for unique accommodation
- Discover offbeat places
Airbnb Gen Z Travel Report India : In today’s changing times, the lifestyle and way of thinking of the youth is changing rapidly. The same change is now evident in the tourism sector as well. If you think that today’s young generation only thinks about saving money when it comes to travel, then you might be wrong. Today’s youth are spending on travel, but their patterns and priorities are completely different. Well-known travel platform Airbnb has recently released a very interesting report titled ‘Never the Same: The New Rules of Gen-Z Travel in India’. According to this report, India’s ‘Generation Z’, aged between 18 and 27Gen-Z) have revealed some surprising and significant facts about their travel habits.
The era of big tour packages is now history!
According to this new report, 7 out of 10 Gen-Z youth in India prefer to take three or more short trips a year rather than one big trip. About 87 percent of the youth indicated their first preference for short trips lasting less than a week, i.e. 2 to 6 nights. This directly means that the era of booking huge tour packages of 15 to 20 days after planning a month in advance like previous generations is now gone. Today’s youth are ready to pack their bags immediately with short vacations or extended weekends from office or college.

Impromptu planning and ‘last minute’ bookings
Another characteristic of today’s youth is that their plans are not pre-planned. According to the report, 66 percent of young people book tickets and accommodation just days or weeks in advance of their trip. Friends suddenly plan a night out or the office suddenly gets a ‘long weekend’, these young people immediately book and go on a trip. Due to this ‘instant’ and flexible mode of travel, the tourism industry is also now having to rapidly change its services.
Travel is not just tourism, but self-discovery!
For Gen-Z, traveling is no longer just about seeing new places or taking photos. 87 percent of young people believe that the way they travel reflects their personal identity and ideology. Hence, 95 percent of youth want their every trip to be unique and experience something different. Most importantly, 90 percent of young people seek out places that haven’t already gone viral on social media or Instagram. This generation tends to avoid the overcrowded and overrated spots seen on Instagram reels and seek out quiet and unique places close to nature.

Don’t want hotels, prefer villas and homestays!
When it comes to living arrangements, this generation has completely different preferences. 63 percent of young people said that they chose a particular place not only because of the name of the city, but also because the accommodation there was beautiful or unique. Homes, villas or homestays that offer a taste of local culture are more attractive to these youngsters than the four-walled rooms of a hotel. When these young people travel with a group of friends, they prefer to stay together in the same large house or private villa instead of booking separate hotel rooms. Also, three out of four young people value ‘who they’re going with’ more than where they’re going.

What does Airbnb’s data show?
Commenting on the trend, Amanpreet Bajaj, Country Head, India and Southeast Asia, Airbnb said, “For Gen-Z, travel has now become one of the most personal and important decisions in life. They express themselves through where they go, what they experience and where they live. According to Airbnb’s official data, Indian Gen-Z searches have increased by more than 30 percent this summer. Notably, domestic bookings for short trips of 2 to 6 nights have registered a huge growth of nearly 80 percent, while group trips with friends have also grown by over 55 percent.
