General Dheeraj Seth becomes the new chief of the Indian Army, assumes the post of Army Chief
New Delhi, 30 June. Indian Army has got new leadership. General Dheeraj Seth took charge as the new Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army on Tuesday, 30 June 2026. Earlier, he was serving as Vice Chief of Army Staff. With his assumption of charge, outgoing Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi (PVSM, AVSM) retired. Before taking over as the Army Chief, General Dheeraj Seth assumed responsibilities in New Delhi, while General Upendra Dwivedi was given a ceremonial guard of honor by the Army at the South Block Lawns. Before this, he visited the National War Memorial and paid tribute to the martyred soldiers.
Four decades of glorious military experience
General Dheeraj Seth, an alumnus of the National Defense Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, was commissioned into the Armored Corps of the Indian Army in December 1986. In his military career spanning nearly 40 years, he has held many important responsibilities at operational, strategic, capacity development and institutional levels. His leadership and experience have made significant contributions towards enhancing the combat capability and modernization of the Indian Army.
Took command from desert to Jammu and Kashmir
General Dheeraj Seth has held many important commands during his military career. These include-
- Commanding an armored regiment in a desert area
- Leading an armored brigade on the Western Front
- Command of anti-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir
Apart from this he also successfully led the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the premier strike formations of the Indian Army.
Took responsibility of Delhi area and two military commands
As Lieutenant General, he served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Delhi area. During this period, he successfully conducted many national and international military events and formal responsibilities. After becoming the Army Commander, he headed both the South-Western Command and the Southern Command. He has the rare experience of leading two major operational military commands and holding important responsibilities at the strategic level for more than two and a half years.
Played important role in modernization of army
General Dheeraj Seth held many important positions in the Army Headquarters related to strategic planning, force management and capability development. He made significant contributions to the modernization of the army, strengthening long-term military structure and capability development plans. He also played a key role in strengthening the operational preparedness of the Indian Army in line with emerging military technologies and future battlefield requirements.
Excellent record in professional military education also
According to the Defense Ministry, General Dheeraj Seth is an outstanding military professional. He consistently performed well during his training and military education. He is a graduate of the Higher Command Course and the National Defense College. In addition, he has also completed the prestigious Command and Staff Course held in Paris, which gave him a deep understanding of global military strategy and contemporary security challenges. Under the leadership of General Dheeraj Seth, the Indian Army is expected to get a new direction for modernization, technical empowerment and national security.
