General Motors Taps into Tesla’s EV Charging Network with New Adapter

New Delhi: General Motors (GM) has taken a significant step to enhance electric vehicle (EV) charging accessibility by allowing its EV owners to use Tesla’s vast Supercharger network. Announced on Wednesday, GM will provide a GM-approved NACS DC adapter, enabling its drivers to access more than 17,800 Tesla Superchargers across the United States. The adapter will be available for $225, purchasable through GM’s vehicle brand mobile apps, making it a convenient option for EV owners.

This move by GM is in line with a broader initiative to improve the overall EV user experience by expanding charging options. By opening access to Tesla’s network, GM drivers will now have the ability to use over 231,800 public Level 2 and DC fast chargers across North America. “Enabling access to even more publicly available fast chargers represents yet another way GM is focused on further improving the customer experience and making the transition to electric more seamless,” said Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy.

Tesla’s Supercharger network is widely recognised as the most reliable charging infrastructure in the U.S. The decision to allow non-Tesla vehicles to use these stations is a game-changing move for the industry. Last year, the White House announced that Tesla would make some of its chargers available to all EVs by the end of 2024. This initiative aligns with President Biden’s target of having 50% of new U.S. car sales be electric by 2030 and installing 500,000 chargers across the country.

GM’s approved adapters will first be made available to U.S. customers, followed by a Canadian rollout later this year. GM is not alone in this transition—Ford began offering similar access to Tesla’s network earlier this year, while Rivian announced plans to join Tesla’s charging network in 2023, with future models featuring standard Tesla charging ports.
