Geoffrey Boycott slams Bazball after England’s Ashes collapse
England’s Ashes setback in Adelaide has reignited questions over Brendon McCullum’s Bazball approach, with the ultra-aggressive style now coming under its harshest examination since it began. After Australia secured a 3–0 advantage to retain the urn, Boycott did not hold back, insisting that the tactic which once rejuvenated the side is now contributing to their problems.
In his column for The Telegraph, Geoffrey Boycott initially praised the influence Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes had in reshaping England’s mindset. However, he then argued that the approach has now lost its effectiveness. Boycott suggested that what once looked like confidence has drifted into arrogance, with England unwilling to adjust their style even when facing stronger teams.
“Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes deserve plenty of praise for what they’ve done for England, but it’s clear that the Bazball approach has reached its limit,” Boycott wrote.
“Pride seems to have overtaken basic common sense, and that situation cannot be allowed to go on,” he added.
Boycott then directed his criticism at England’s leadership, cautioning that persisting with the same philosophy could only push the team further backwards. He urged the decision-makers to step in with firm action instead of continuing to defend performances that no longer live up to their bold claims.
“They’re like two men continuing to dig even though it leads nowhere,” he said.
“When something clearly isn’t working, you have to stop forcing it. Making changes is crucial to progress further,” he said.
The former opener also wondered whether Stokes is ready to rein in his attacking instincts if it helps create better balance within the team. Boycott underlined that accountability must apply to everyone, and even the captain cannot be exempt from scrutiny.
“You would prefer to keep him,” Boycott said, “but if he cannot accept that a different approach is needed, then England will have to look for another captain.”
