Ecclestone was visibly dejected but Voll was seen placing a hand on her shoulder to comfort the England spinner as the hosts lost their first-ever ICC final on home soil.

ENG-W vs AUS-W, Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Final: Sophie Ecclestone struggles as England’s unbeaten run comes to an end

Ecclestone, who happens to be England’s primary spinner, struggled to make things happen despite Voll’s wicket for 9 by Lauren Bell in the powerplay. Australia launched an outstanding counterattack as Beth Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield with a 100-run partnership to put the six-time champions on track for victory. Although Ecclestone dismissed Mooney, the keeper-batter had scored a brisk 64 by then and Australia remained only 11 runs adrift of victory then. They eventually crossed the line with 16 balls and seven wickets to spare.

With the toss falling in favour of Sophie Molineux, she sent the hosts into bat. While the England captain stood tall with an unbeaten 58, Freya Kemp’s 27-ball 44* was the impetus that the 2009 champions needed to propel them to a competitive total. Alice Capsey also chipped in with a 20-ball 23. Molineux, Kim Garth, Lucy Hamilton and Annabel Sutherland took one wicket each.

ENG-W vs AUS-W, Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Final: Who won the Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament award?

Mooney was crowned both the Player of the Match of the final and the tournament. The keeper-batter has finished the tournament with 238 runs in seven innings at 47.60, second only to Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who ended with 302. Reacting to her approach at the post-game presentation, the 32-year-old explained that she prefers playing with plenty of conviction and bravery. She also thanked the support staff for their unbridled support.

“This has been on the calendar for a little while for us. It’s just nice to be part of the squad, first and foremost, and then have a role to play in batting and keeping. Just pumped to be here. There’s been a lot of evolution in this group in the last 12 months, and a lot of growth, and some fun times as well. So, really nice to be part of the team today. I think just playing the game with a bit of conviction, a lot of freedom, a lot of bravery, and backing each other and having lots of fun. You know, I mentioned we’ve got a lot of support on the sideline. Our coaching staff and support staff are amazing. Had a couple of niggles along the way, but we’ve managed to have a full squad to pick from in a big game, and you can’t shy away from how important that is.”
