In this video, Kaushambi police station in-charge (SHO) Ajay Sharma is seen placing a mobile phone on the back of a young man and claiming to know his citizenship. This strange experiment by the police officer has now become a matter of debate regarding law, logic and constitutional rights.
As soon as the video went viral, questions have been raised on the functioning of the police. People are surprised that there is such a ‘machine’ or method, which can declare a person as Indian or Bangladeshi on the spot. There is a lot of taunting going on regarding this on social media and Kaushambi Police is being disgraced.
Claimed to reveal citizenship through mobile, told young man to be Bangladeshi
In the viral clip, it can be seen that SHO Ajay Sharma puts a mobile phone on the back of a young man and says that the machine is telling him that he is Bangladeshi. Whereas the young man is calling himself a resident of Araria district of Bihar. Not only this, his daughter is also seen showing documents related to her identity on her mobile phone. Despite this, in the video the station in-charge is heard saying, “You are not lying? The machine is telling you that you are from Bangladesh.” This dialogue is now the most discussed on social media.
The matter came to light during ‘Operation Torch’
It is being told that this matter is of 23rd December. Before Christmas and New Year, in view of security in Kaushambi area, Police and RAF had jointly launched ‘Operation Torch’. Under this campaign, after the flag march, documents were being checked door to door in the slum areas located near Bhowapur. The purpose of this action was said to be to identify Rohingya and Bangladeshi citizens living illegally. During this time, a father and his daughter living in the slums were interrogated.
Claim not accepted despite showing identity card
It is clearly visible in the video that the father and daughter are calling themselves residents of Bihar. The daughter also shows the ID proof in her mobile. Despite this, the police station in-charge, citing the alleged ‘machine’, describes the youth as a Bangladeshi. Not only this, the SHO tries to prove that the machine is telling the truth by placing the mobile phone on his waist or back. This entire scene has raised serious questions on the understanding and sensitivity of the police.
Made fun of on social media, police in the dock
After the video surfaced, people made a lot of jokes on social media. Users are asking what is this technology which is determining citizenship on the spot without any official process. Many people called it a mockery of law and human rights. After this incident, Kaushambi Police is being heavily criticized and the police department seems to be in an uncomfortable situation.
ACP’s call not picked up, mystery of ‘machine’ continues
When an attempt was made to get a response from ACP Indirapuram Abhishek Tripathi on this entire matter, his phone could not be picked up. At present no official statement has come from the police. Although, the truth about the so-called ‘machine’ has not been revealed yet, but the viral video has definitely put the Kaushambi police in the circle of questions.
