Gig Workers Strike: Gig workers have announced a nationwide strike on 31 December. This may affect the delivery services of Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, Flipkart, Amazon, Zepto and other e-commerce companies.
Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union and Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers have said that these workers are protesting against poor working conditions, declining earnings, lack of security and no social security.
Workers have demanded the central and state governments to regulate these platform companies. In the statement issued by the gig workers, the strike was also mentioned on December 25, although its impact was not clearly visible.

What are the demands of the workers?
Gig workers are mainly making these nine demands:
A fair and transparent pay structure should be implemented.
The 10 minute delivery model should be stopped immediately.
There should be a ban on arbitrary blocking of IDs and imposition of penalties.
Necessary safety gear and safety measures should be provided.
There should be no discrimination on the basis of algorithms and everyone should get equal work opportunities.
Respectful behavior from the platform and customers should be ensured.
Breaks should be given during work and excessive work should be prevented.
App and technical support should be strengthened, especially for problems related to payment and routing.
Social security benefits like health insurance, accident cover and pension should be provided.

Who are gig workers?
Employees who work on payment according to each task are called gig workers. However, such employees can remain associated with a company or platform for a long time. There are generally five types of gig workers:
Independent contractor.
Employees working for online platforms.
Employees of contract firms.
Staff available to work on call.
