‘Gill is a quality player but…’ What did Agarkar say after ousting Shubman?

The Indian team for the T20 World Cup 2026 was announced on Saturday (20 December). A shocking change was seen in the 15-member team captained by Suryakumar Yadav. Shubman Gill has not been selected in the T20 World Cup team. Gill was being seen as the future captain of this format. He was also given the responsibility of vice-captain but he was suddenly dropped from the World Cup team.

Akshar Patel has again been made the vice-captain in place of Gill. With Gill’s exit, his close friend Ishan Kishan has entered the team. On the question of Gill not being selected in the big event, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar said in the press conference, ‘Gill is struggling to score runs and he has not been selected in the team, so we needed a vice-captain.’

Gill out due to team combination

Ajit Agarkar told that Gill has been dropped due to team combination. He said, ‘We know that Shubman Gill is a quality player but perhaps his runs are a little less at the moment. His not playing in the last World Cup was also unfortunate because we played with a different combination. Actually combination is more important than anything else. When you pick a team of 15 people, unfortunately someone has to be left out. Unfortunately at the moment that player is Gill.

India’s 15-member squad:

Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Tilak Verma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dubey, Axar Patel (vice-captain), Rinku Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakraborty, Washington Sundar, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper)
