Superman Glenn Phillips Catches Ollie Pope Out
He does it again. Glenn Phillips pulls off another jaw-dropping catch and adds it to his growing, mind-boggling catalogue of sensational catches on the cricket field.
Ollie Pope, batting on 77 in the 1st NZ vs ENG Test, will feel unfortunate to miss out on a boundary and a three-figure score as he ran into a flying Phillips, who pulled off a ‘Superman’ effort to end his innings.
At the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, Pope and Harry Brook pulled England out of trouble from 71/4 in reply to New Zealand’s first innings total of 348 through their 151-run stand. Sticking to the Bazball mantra, the duo attacked at will, scoring 151 runs off 188 balls.
They were helped by some ordinary bowling and poor catching from New Zealand. But not on this occasion, as Glenn Phillips took a one-handed blinder at gully to dismiss Pope.
It was a harmless back-of-length delivery from Tim Southee, bowled at the speed of 125 KPH outside the off-stump. Pope rocked back and unleashed a ferocious cut shot. It flew at a high speed to the right of Phillips, who was stationed at gully.
But as he’s done throughout his career, Phillips showed incredible nimbleness off his feet and athleticism to put his body on the line and complete the catch. At one point during his drive, Phillips was completely horizontal to the ground, once again evoking the ‘Superman’ comparisons.

Meanwhile, the match seems nicely poised, maybe slightly in England’s favor at the moment, but the visitors have the tendency to lose their wickets quickly in heaps if they play attacking shots. Brook has brought up his 7th Test century, while Pope was dismissed for 77. At the time of writing, England are 274/5, trailing by 74 more runs. Brook and Stokes are at the crease.
Earlier, the Kiwis were bowled out for 348. Kane Williamson, on his return from an injury, top-scored with 93, while Bashir and Carse took four wickets each.
