Gold crosses crafted by 400-year-old Belgian firm installed atop HCMC’s iconic cathedral

A cross is lifted to the roof of the cathedral.

At 8 a.m. on Thursday, Archbishop Joseph Nguyen Nang of the Archdiocese of Ho Chi Minh City and Archbishop Marek Zalewski, the Vatican’s Apostolic Nuncio to Vietnam, performed a ceremony to place two gold-plated crosses, each weighing 400 kg and standing over 3.7 m tall atop the cathedral’s zinc spires.

In Catholicism, the cross is the holiest symbol, representing the love, sacrifice and mercy of Jesus Christ for the redemption of humanity.
