Golden Milk-Shake

This Golden-Milk Shake takes inspiration from golden milk, a traditional Indian beverage of warmed milk, turmeric and spices. Instead of enjoying it warm, we cool it down by adding a frozen banana and whirl it up in the blender for a thick and creamy dessert. Like the warm drink, this vibrant beverage offers plenty of turmeric for its anti-inflammatory benefits. Ready in just five minutes and with no added sugar, this easy milkshake is a delicious way to cap off an evening meal. Read on for our tips for making this milkshake, including how to get the best texture.

Tips from the EatingWell Test Kitchen

These are the key tips we learned while developing and testing this recipe in our Test Kitchen to make sure it works, tastes great and is good for you too!

  • To get the best creamy, thick texture, make sure you use a frozen banana. It’s easier to freeze banana slices instead of blending a whole frozen banana or slicing a banana once it’s frozen.
  • If you prefer, nondairy milk can be used instead of regular milk. Almond, coconut, soy or oat milk are all good alternatives. Be sure that whatever you use has no added sugars.

Nutrition Notes

  • Bananas add natural sweetness to this recipe, so there’s no need for added sugars. They also provide potassium, a blood pressure–lowering mineral that most of us don’t get enough of.
  • Turmeric is a rich source of curcumin, an anti-inflammatory compound that may reduce symptoms of inflammatory diseases like arthritis. Curcumin’s anti-inflammatory action may also relieve symptoms of depression and protect against certain cancers. We pair turmeric and ground pepper together in this recipe, as black pepper can help the body absorb curcumin better.
