Good news for employees, new rules come into effect from April 1
New Delhi. New labor laws are going to be implemented in India from April 1, 2026, which will bring major changes in the working hours, salary, overtime, social security and working conditions of the employees. The central government has finalized four major labor codes, which bring 44 old labor laws into a simple and consolidated framework. Its objective is not only to protect the rights of employees but also to give flexibility to industries in working arrangements.
Four new labor codes and their purpose
1.Salary Code – Ensuring timely and transparent salaries to employees.
2.Social Security Code – Expanding the scope of pension, insurance and other security benefits.
3. Industrial Relations Code – To ease the process of controlling and resolving disputes between employees and employers.
4.Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code – To ensure safety, health and good working conditions at the workplace. Through these codes, the government has tried to bring the working system in line with international standards.
Changes in working hours and overtime
Under the new rules, daily working time will be 8 hours and weekly working time will be 48 hours. However, now companies will be able to provide flexible working models to employees. This means that employees can manage their working hours as per their convenience, and will receive appropriate overtime benefits if they work extra hours. This arrangement has been designed in accordance with international labor standards, which will provide a balance to both employees and employers.
social security expansion
Under the new system, now about 100 crore workers will be covered under social security benefits. Presently this figure is around 94 crores. This will also include unorganized sector workers, gig and platform workers, and self-employed people. The government has targeted to implement it by March 2026.
improving employee rights
Under the new laws, all employees will now compulsorily receive appointment letters, which will ensure formal recognition of employment. Equal pay for equal work and equal opportunities for women have been ensured. Women will now be able to work in safe shifts and employees above 40 years of age will also be entitled to a free annual health checkup.
Provisions in line with international standards
Additional working hours will now be completely regularized. Industries will be able to hire employees for additional hours as per the fluctuations of their work, while the workers will receive fair compensation for the same. This step provides a balanced and transparent arrangement for both employees and employers.
