‘Good Time To Make A Jump’: Vijay Varma On Taking Up Hollywood Projects

Vijay Varma has revealed that he is interested in taking up Hollywood projects. The actor recently impressed viewers with his performance in the Netflix series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. Based on true events, the story revolves around the 1999 hijack of flight IC 814 in Kathmandu. Vijay Varma portrayed the role of Captain Devi Sharan who took the passengers to safety. Not just IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, Vijay Varma has also won hearts with his acting chops in the thriller web show Mirzapur alongside films like Darlings and Jaane Jaan. Given the present circumstances, the actor feels that it is a “good time” to make a leap to Hollywood.

In an interaction with Variety, Vijay Verma shared, “It’s a very good time to make that jump” as Hollywood has opened its doors to Indian celebrities. According to him, the foreign film circuit is taking the “colour-blind casting” route, creating more opportunities for actors and actresses based in India. Colour-blind casting refers to roping in a celebrity for a project regardless of gender, race and ethnicity. Bollywood stars like Ishaan Khatter and Ali Fazal have already stepped into Hollywood. They have also managed to secure roles that were not written in based on their ethnicity.

“With more acceptance that is coming in by the international producers, directors looking at Indian diaspora actors, brown actors in a variety of roles, it’s a very lucrative time,” added Vijay Varma. The actor is keen on exploring these opportunities early next year. For now, he chooses to remain focused on essaying characters that require a certain amount of challenge. Films and shows that resonate with the audience are also his priorities at the moment.

Work-wise, Vijay Varma has wrapped up the shoot of director Vibu Puri’s Ul Jalool Ishq, co-starring Naseeruddin Shah, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sharib Hashmi. The movie centres around an owner of an Urdu letterpress who is looking for a reclusive poet. Vijay called his upcoming project a “beautiful, intimate story”. The Murder Mubarak actor has also begun filming for a Prime Video original series titled Matka King, helmed by Nagraj Manjule.
