Sundar Pichai announces major layoffs at these top positions – Obnews
Employees holding top management positions of Google have got a big blow, as this giant tech company has cut 10 percent of its top management positions. According to a report by Business Insider, CEO Sundar Pichai shared the news during a consensus meeting on Wednesday.
Sundar Pichai explained that the layoffs are part of Google's ongoing efforts to improve efficiency, streamline operations, and improve productivity. According to Business Insider, the cuts affect managerial, director-level and vice president positions, in line with the company's changing business priorities.
A Google spokesperson revealed that some of the affected management positions have been converted to non-managerial positions, while others have been eliminated entirely. The move is part of Google's ongoing efficiency strategy. It was first announced in September 2022, when CEO Sundar Pichai aimed to increase efficiency by 20 percent.
During the meeting Pichai also talked about redefining “Googleness” as something that reflects the company's culture and values. “It's time to update what Googleyness means for today's Google,” Pichai said. He stressed the need for the company to adapt to be ready for future challenges. Google has been focusing on improving efficiency for the last two years.
Pichai announced a goal of making the company 20 percent more efficient by September 2022. Just a few months later, in January 2023, the tech giant implemented a historic round of layoffs and cut nearly 12,000 jobs. The move for efficiency comes at a time when the tech giant faces increasing competition in artificial intelligence, with rivals like OpenAI introducing innovative products that challenge Google's leadership in areas like search . Google's latest innovations include an AI video generator that reportedly outperformed OpenAI during testing. Another highlight is the Gemini model series, which features “logic” models designed to demonstrate its decision-making capabilities.
