What is ELS and how does it work?
This feature is already available on Android smartphones. When someone calls 112, ELS automatically shares that person’s location with emergency services. The person seeking help does not need to provide their location information. This feature uses GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile networks to determine location.
Launched first in Uttar Pradesh
The ELS feature was first launched in Uttar Pradesh. It was connected to the 112 emergency system with the help of Uttar Pradesh Police and Pert Telecom Solutions. Uttar Pradesh was chosen as it receives millions of emergency calls and messages every day. During pilot testing, ELS helped identify the location of more than 20 million calls and messages. In many cases, the call was disconnected within seconds, yet the location was successfully transmitted to the control room.
ELS will take full care of privacy
Google claims that privacy is fully respected in the emergency location service. Not only is this feature completely free, it is also activated only during emergency calls or messages. It transmits the user’s location directly from the phone to emergency services. Google has clarified that even Google itself will not be able to see the location sent by this service. Currently, this feature is available in Uttar Pradesh for users running Android 6.0 or above. Google will soon launch it in other states as well.
How to enable this feature
You don’t need to do anything extra to enable the ELS feature. As soon as you call 112, this feature will automatically activate and the user’s location will be transmitted from the phone to the emergency services. Since this is an emergency feature, it does not need to be activated separately.
