The family is in shock instead of happiness over a grand wedding in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The groom deceived the bride’s family by pretending to be an IAS officer. The bride’s family spent around Rs 30 lakh on the wedding, out of which Rs 15 lakh was given as dowry before the marriage.

Who was the groom and how was the family deceived?

According to the complaint, accused Pritam Kumar Nishad won the trust of the bride’s family by claiming himself to be an IAS officer posted in Manikpur. He showed photos and videos of the office setup and also showed photographs with alleged political personalities. The bride’s father said, ‘We did not investigate out of fear that the marriage would be cancelled.’ Pritam had earlier promised not to take dowry, but later asked for Rs 15 lakh in the name of marriage expenses. The family gave Rs 10 lakh in cash and Rs 5 lakh on the day of engagement.

What happened on the wedding day?

The marriage took place on 11 March 2026. The bride’s father made hotel accommodation and other arrangements for the groom’s family. At the Tilak ceremony, Pritam said that the household items would be returned later as he was going on foreign posting.

What did the bride tell?

In the complaint, the bride’s father said that the next day after the wedding, his daughter called him and said that she was continuously teased from the way to the wedding till her in-laws’ house. When the family reached there, they found that the daughter was locked in a small room. “Pritam and his family were planning to sell me, and if my father had not arrived on time, I would have been sold,” the bride said. SSP Kaustubh said that an FIR has been registered against Pritam and his family and the matter is under investigation. He assured that Pritam will be arrested soon.
