Many websites were leaking your confidential information, government took these big steps to stop it

Obnews Desk: The Central Government has taken a big decision to further secure the data of citizens. Let us tell you that the Central Government has blocked all the websites that reveal Aadhaar and PAN card information. Also, the state IT secretary was empowered to resolve complaints and provide compensation for data privacy violations.

The government said that it is committed to providing an open, secure and reliable, accountable internet. It has come to the notice of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology that some websites are exposing sensitive personally identifiable information of Indian citizens, including Aadhaar and PAN card details. UIDAI lodged complaint

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) under Section 29(4) of the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016A complaint has been lodged with the concerned police authorities for violation of the ban on public display of Aadhaar information.

Analysis of these websites conducted by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team has revealed that these websites have some security vulnerabilities. Guidance has been provided to the concerned website owners regarding actions to be taken at their level to strengthen the ICT infrastructure and fix the vulnerabilities.

Powers given to State IT Secretaries

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has notified the Rules, 2011, which provide for non-publication and non-disclosure of sensitive personal data. Any adversely affected party can approach the adjudicating authority to file a complaint under Section 46 of the IT Act and demand compensation. IT Secretaries of States have been empowered as adjudicating officers under the IT Act.

Furthermore, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 has already come into force and the rules under this Act are in the final stages of drafting. An awareness program has also been launched with the aim of making the government, industry and citizens aware of its impact. This will help create nationwide awareness and understanding about responsible usage and proactive measures among various stakeholders, thereby curbing unnecessary display of personal data by various entities.
