Big action by Modi government on OTT! 5 apps showing obscene content blocked, more than 100 series banned

Government Bans 5 OTT Platforms: The central government has taken strict action regarding the increasing objectionable content on online platforms. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has blocked five OTT platforms for streaming obscene and vulgar content. This action was taken due to non-compliance of self-regulation despite repeated warnings.

On which platforms did it fall?

The platforms blocked by the government include MoodXVIP, Koyal Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel and Jugnu apps. The ministry has directed Internet service providers to stop access to these platforms with immediate effect.

This step has been taken under the Information Technology Rules 2021 and Section 69A of the Information Technology Act 2000, which empowers the government to block online content. The purpose of these rules is to maintain public decency, protect national interests and enforce ethical standards on digital media.

Action has already been taken

This is not the first time that such action has been taken on OTT platforms. Even in July 2025, the government had banned many apps and websites for allegedly showing pornographic and vulgar content. It was also said at that time that the platforms concerned were in serious violation of Indian laws.

What were the allegations on the content?

According to the ministry, ‘sexually explicit’ scenes and obscene scenes were being broadcast on the blocked platforms for a long time. The investigation found that these shows neither had any clear story nor social message, but mainly focused on lewd and provocative scenes.

Violation continued despite warning

According to sources, advisories and reminders were sent to these platforms earlier also, but they continued uploading content through other domains. Action was also taken against them in March 2024, after which more than 100 web series were removed. However, investigation revealed that some content was re-uploaded to the new domain. The government says that it is important to ensure responsibility and decency in the digital space. Similar strict action will be taken against violation of rules in the coming times also.
