Government gives big gift to gallantry award winning soldiers, free AC train travel for life along with parents and wife

The Central Government has taken an important decision in honor of gallantry medal winners of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. According to the government order issued on Thursday, now the heroes awarded with Army Medal, Navy Medal and Vayu Sena Medal will be given the facility of free travel in Indian Railways for life.

Under this new scheme, not only the medal winners but also their spouses will be eligible for this benefit. If the medal winners were unmarried and have been martyred, their parents will get this facility.

Under this new scheme, medal winners will also be able to take an assistant with them. This travel facility will be valid in premium categories of Railways like First Class, Second AC and AC Chair Car.

New employment opportunities for ex-servicemen and firefighters

Along with honoring the medal winners, the government has also taken concrete steps for the rehabilitation of retired soldiers and firefighters. Indian Railways and the Indian Army have signed a ‘cooperation framework’. Its main objective is to provide better career options in civilian life to the soldiers retiring from the army.

  • Railways has made special provision of reservation for ex-servicemen in its recruitment policy:-

  • In Level-1 (Group D) posts: 20% reservation.

  • In Level-2 and above posts: 10% reservation.

  • For Agniveers: A provision of 10% reservation has been made in Level-1 and 5% in Level-2.

Initiative for immediate recruitment on contract

The Ministry has taken a new initiative to quickly fill the vacant posts in Railways. Till the regular recruitment process is completed, ex-servicemen are being appointed to the posts of ‘Pointsman’ on contract basis. At present this process is going on for more than 5,000 posts and 9 railway divisions have also signed an agreement with the Army for this.

Shared contribution in nation building

This coordination between Indian Railways and Army is not limited to jobs only. Strategic infrastructure projects, such as the ‘Dedicated Freight Corridor’ and ‘Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link’ have further facilitated troop movement. Apart from this, attention is also being given to skill development of soldiers through ‘Gati Shakti University’.
