Strict restrictions imposed on OTT platforms, government took a big step
New Delhi: The Central Government has taken an important action to eliminate the increasing obscene and objectionable content on OTT platforms. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an order to completely shut down five major platforms. The government clearly argues that these platforms were not only promoting obscene content but were also violating the information technology laws of the country. This move is being considered a turning point in monitoring online content and adhering to ethical standards.
Complaints increased, government took decision
In this action taken on Tuesday, ministry officials said that complaints were being received against these platforms for a long time. It was said in these complaints that these platforms have crossed the limits of public decency and are broadcasting obscene material. Following the prescribed procedure, the Ministry decided to ban these platforms. Authorities believe that freedom of digital platforms does not mean that unethical or illegal content should be displayed on them.
Platforms facing strict action
The OTT platforms that have been shut down include **MoodXVIP**, **Koyal Playpro**, **Digi Movieplex**, **Feel**, and **Jugnu**. The government has directed all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to ensure that access and operation of these platforms is stopped immediately. The Ministry has also clarified that digital platforms have the same social and legal responsibilities as print or television media.
Legal basis and further action
This action has been taken under the Information Technology (IT) Rules 2021 and obscenity related laws of the country. The government has exercised its powers under Section 69A of the IT Act 2000. This section empowers the government to shut down any online content or website on the grounds of national security, public order or violation of ethical standards. Officials have warned that if any other platform is found violating the rules, the same strict action will be taken against it.
