Government is trying to erase Nehru’s legacy… Sonia Gandhi targets BJP without taking name
New Delhi:Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi has made a big attack on BJP. He says that the main goal of today’s government is to tarnish the image of the first Prime Minister of independent India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. She alleges that a planned campaign is being run to insult, distort and defame Nehru’s personality and his contributions.
Sonia Gandhi was speaking at the inauguration program of Nehru Center India organized at Jawahar Bhawan, where she expressed deep concern over the injustice being done to Nehru.
Criticize Nehru, but do not tamper with the facts.
In her speech, Sonia Gandhi made it clear that analysis and criticism of any historical personality is part of a democratic society and should not be stopped. But he also said that it is completely unfair to deliberately tamper with Nehru’s writings, speeches and statements and present a false interpretation.
He said that Nehru’s views can be debated, his decisions can be criticized, but distorting the facts is not only unfair but also insensitive towards history.
BJP wants to erase Nehru’s influence
Sonia Gandhi did not directly name BJP or RSS, but her statements were clearly pointing towards the current political environment. He said that the present government is not only trying to remove Nehru from history, but is also weakening the basic social, economic and political foundations of India which were established under the leadership of Nehru.
He said that this is not just an attempt to defame Nehru, but an attack on the progressive vision on the basis of which the structure of modern India stands. Sonia stressed that the values of the freedom movement, the strengthening of democratic institutions and the development of scientific thinking were the contributions of Nehru’s leadership. Weakening these principles is harmful for the future of the country.
Congress’s reaction to Rajnath Singh’s comment
This statement of Sonia Gandhi has come at a time when a few days ago Defense Minister Rajnath Singh had claimed that Pandit Nehru wanted to use government funds for the construction of Babri Masjid, which was stopped by Sardar Patel. This statement of Rajnath Singh intensified the political controversy. Congress termed this as absolutely false and said that this is an attempt to take political advantage by distorting history.
Congress leaders alleged that such claims are being made only with the aim of spreading polarization in the society. The party said that repeatedly dragging leaders associated with the freedom movement into political controversies is part of the strategy to degrade their legacy.
Appeal to protect Nehru’s legacy
In her address, Sonia Gandhi appealed to the public and intellectuals to be aware of Nehru’s thoughts, scientific approach, democratic values and his contribution to nation building and play a role in preserving this legacy. He said that ignoring Nehru would also be an attack on India’s progress, diversity and constitutional values.
