Rules implemented for social media and OTT platforms, government will take strict action against fake content
Social Media and OTT Platforms Rules: The central government has implemented strict rules to prevent obscene content, misinformation and cyber crimes on social media and OTT platforms. The government’s focus is on creating an open, safe and reliable internet, with priority given to the online safety of women and children.
Accountability of digital platforms has been fixed under the IT Act 2000, IT Rules 2021 and the Indian Judicial Code. The government has made it clear that strict action will be taken against platforms that do not follow the rules.
Open and safe internet
The government says that the main objective of its digital policies is to create a safe and reliable internet environment in India. Under this, it will be ensured that no illegal, obscene or misleading content is circulated online. Concrete steps have been taken in this direction at both legal and administrative levels.
Strict monitoring from IT Act 2000 and IT Rules 2021
The responsibilities of digital platforms have been made clear under the IT Act 2000 and IT Rules 2021. These laws have provisions for strict punishment for obscene content, privacy violations and cyber crimes. Police have also been given powers to investigate, search and arrest.
Illegal content will have to be removed within stipulated time
According to IT Rules 2021, it will be mandatory to remove illegal content within the stipulated time on the instructions of the court or government. It is necessary to remove content related to privacy violation, fake identity, nudity or obscenity within 24 hours. Every platform will have to appoint a Grievance Officer.
Mandatory disposal of complaint within 72 hours
If no solution is found, the user can appeal to the Grievance Appellate Committee. Additional responsibility on Facebook, Instagram and X. Social media platforms in India which have more than 50 lakh users have been considered as Significant Social Media Intermediaries. Such platforms will: Have to appoint local authorities in India. Regular compliance reports will have to be issued. Law agencies will have to cooperate in the investigation. In serious cases, help will have to be provided in tracing the identity of the originator of the message. If the rules are not followed, these platforms will not get the legal protection provided under the IT Act.
Strict stance on OTT Platforms also
Code of Ethics has been implemented for OTT platforms under Part-III of IT Rules 2021. Showing content against the law will not be allowed. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr. L.
