The Indian government will summon Meta on Instagram ads promoting material related to sexual exploitation of children. Sources said on Friday that IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has directed officials of her ministry to summon Meta over Instagram ads promoting material related to sexual exploitation of children.

Government sent notice for the second time

He said that the IT Ministry will seek answers from Meta on this issue. This is the second time this week that the government has put pressure on Meta. Last Wednesday also the Central Government had issued a notice to Meta. In the notice, questions have been raised on the username feature planned on WhatsApp. It expressed concern that this could lead to a significant increase in online fraud, phishing, digital arrest scams and fake identity attacks.

Center sought answers from the company

It directed the platform to stop the feature until consultations on the issue are completed to the satisfaction of the government. The Center had also asked Meta why action should not be initiated under the IT Act and rules on the new features of WhatsApp, which can increase cyber crimes.
