Government’s big decision on online gaming, new rules will be implemented from May 1

New Delhi. The new rules of online gaming will come into effect from May 1. The government has made complete preparations for this. In the new rules, many online games have been exempted while some games have been tightened. MeitY i.e. Ministry of Electronics and IT has issued a notification regarding new rules for online gaming. With this notification, the way has been cleared for creating an online gaming authority in India. With the new rules, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act will come into force.

Issuing the notification, Union IT Secretary S Krishnan said that under the new rule, most online games will not need to be registered in India. The government has already banned real money gambling games. Now monitoring of online games will be implemented only under special conditions. However, the government has made it clear that registration for esports games will be mandatory as before. The aim of the government is to promote e-sports and online gaming in India.




  • The IT Secretary said that the government has tried to keep the entire system as light as possible. Most of the games, which do not involve any money related transactions, have been given the freedom to work without registration. However, if the gaming company wishes, they can get registration done, that is, this process has been made optional.

    • The government has already banned games involving real money and gambling. In such a situation, any real money game will be identified and banned.
    • Registration will be mandatory for e-sports games.

Not only this, strictness has also been taken regarding the data protection and safety of the users, due to which their data will be completely safe. The government had sought feedback last year in October 2025 regarding the rules of online gaming.
