Government's big step to stop SIM card fraud – Obnews

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has directed the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to make biometric verification through Aadhaar card mandatory for all new SIM card connections from now on. This means that to buy a SIM card, people will have to show their Aadhaar card and their identity will be verified biometrically.

How were SIM cards available earlier?
Earlier, people used to use documents like Voter ID, Driving License or Passport to get a new SIM card. But now SIM card will not be issued without Aadhar card and biometric verification. Shopkeepers must ensure that only customers verified with Aadhaar card can collect SIM cards.

Efforts to stop scams related to fake documents
In a recent survey, it was found that many people were purchasing SIM cards using fake documents and were using them for fraud and other cyber crimes. In view of this, the government has taken this strict step.

Monitoring will be done with the help of AI
The government has said that now with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI), those people who are obtaining SIM cards with the help of fake documents will be identified. Strict action will be taken in such cases.

Cyber crimes will be curbed
This new rule has been implemented with the aim of preventing cyber crimes and fraud. Aadhaar card based verification will reduce the use of fake SIM cards, making the process of issuing SIM cards more transparent and secure.
