Govt to build memorial for Manmohan Singh, location to be finalised soon: Sources

New Delhi: The central government has decided to build a memorial for late Manmohan Singh, according to sources. The location for the memorial will be finalised in the next 3-4 days. Sources also said that Manmohan Singh’s family has been told about the memorial and they have expressed their consent to the government regarding the proposal. The last rites of the former PM will take place on Saturday at Nigambodh Ghat at 11.45 am.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had discussed the last rites and memorial of Manmohan Singh with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Miister Amit Shah. He had requested that a memorial be constructed for the former prime minister and had also sent a letter to PM Modi regarding the matter.

Congress demands cremation at memorial site

However, a statement issued by the Home Ministry said that the former prime minister will be cremated at Nigambodh Ghat on Saturday at 11:45 am, without mentioning anything about the memorial. In contrast, Congress has demanded that the former Prime Minister be cremated at the site where the memorial will be established.

On Friday, the Congress party accused the government of deliberately insulting India’s first Sikh prime minister by failing to finalise a location for both his cremation and memorial. A government source said, “The decision to build a memorial in honour of Manmohan Singh has been communicated to the Congress, but they have turned it into a political issue.”
