Country. Voting is taking place today for the Assam Assembly Elections 2026, where a total of 722 candidates are trying their luck on 126 seats. In this election, 211 candidates from national parties, 116 from state parties, 137 from registered parties and 258 independent candidates are in the fray. The election atmosphere is at its peak across the state and voters are ready to exercise their franchise.
2.49 crore voters, more than 31 thousand polling stations-
This time a total of 2,49,58,139 voters are eligible to vote in Assam. For peaceful and orderly voting, 31,486 polling stations have been set up, where tight security arrangements have been made.
Everyone’s eyes were fixed on these giants-
There are many big faces in the fray in the elections, on whom everyone’s eyes are fixed:
Himanta Biswa Sarma – Incumbent Chief Minister and key leader of the BJP alliance, is contesting from Jalukbari seat.
Gaurav Gogoi – Assam Congress President and key face of the opposition alliance, in the fray from Jorhat seat.
Badruddin Ajmal – AIUDF chief, contesting from Binnakandi seat.
Akhil Gogoi – Raijor Party leader, candidate from Sibsagar seat.
Lurinjyoti Gogoi – Assam Jatiya Parishad chief, contesting from Khowang seat.
Atul Bora – Leader of Assam Gana Parishad, candidate from Bokakhat seat.
Apart from these, leaders like Hagrama Mohilari, Urkhao Gwara Brahma, Sushmita Dev and Pramod Boro are also making the election contest interesting.
New alliance, changed equation-
Before the 2026 elections, a new alliance of eight parties named ‘Assam United Front’ has been formed under the leadership of Congress, which is challenging the BJP-led NDA. However, AIUDF has been kept out of this alliance.
