Migrants’ boat sinks again near Greece, 28 people saved but 3 people still missing; Rescue continues

Greece Boat Accident: A boat carrying migrants trying to enter Europe illegally from Türkiye sank in the sea off the Greek island of Samos on Tuesday. According to Greek officials, 28 people have been rescued safely in this accident, while three people are still reported missing. A large-scale search and rescue operation is being conducted to find the missing people.

The Hellenic Coast Guard said the weather at the time of the accident was extremely bad and wind speeds reached high on the Beaufort scale. Relief and rescue operations are facing difficulties due to strong winds and high waves. Despite this, Coast Guard teams, Navy and other agencies are continuously engaged in the operation.

How did the accident happen?

According to local media, the migrants’ boat capsized after hitting rocks near the shoreline. After the accident, the people who fell into the sea were pulled out with the help of the coast guard and local fishermen. All the 28 rescued people have been admitted to a nearby local hospital for first aid.

Officials said that a child was seriously injured in this accident, who has been airlifted to Athens for better treatment. At present, the nationality of the migrants has not been officially confirmed. The matter is being investigated through which network this boat was being operated.

hundreds of people have lost their lives

Greece has long been a major gateway for illegal migrants into the EU. In particular, the sea route from Türkiye to the Greek islands is the most used by migrants, although this route is considered extremely dangerous. Millions of migrants have arrived in Greece since 2015, but hundreds have lost their lives during the risky sea journeys.

According to data from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex, migrant traffic on the Eastern Mediterranean route has declined by about 30 percent in the first 11 months of 2025 compared to 2024. Despite this, such accidents are continuously occurring. According to Frontex, about 46,200 people have been recorded reaching Europe through this route so far this year.

More recently, 18 people died when another boat sank near the island of Crete in early December. Apart from this, on December 8, a 12-year-old child lost his life in an incident near Samos when a smuggler forced migrants to jump into the sea from a speedboat. After these incidents, human rights organizations have intensified their demand from European countries to ensure safe passage, humanitarian approach and strong rescue system.
